Blog 3 | Why I Chose the Suzuki V-Strom SX250 – A Rider’s Tale of Lessons, Loss, and Liberation

Hi Folks,

Krishna here – back with another chapter from my motorcycling diary. This time, I’m diving deep into a personal decision:

Why did I choose the Suzuki V-Strom SX 250?
When there are dozens of options in the 250cc+ segment, why this one?

Let’s start with a quick rewind:

  • Was it a video that inspired me? – Maybe!

  • Was it someone who influenced my decision? – Nope.

  • Was it based on past experience? – Hell yes!

  • Was it for showing off? – NEVER.

The Backstory

2021 was one of the darkest years of my life – I lost my father to COVID. In that haze of grief, frustration, and confusion, I sold off my Pulsar RS200. It was a decision rooted in pure dissatisfaction. Constant breakdowns, unexplained issues, and the worst part? Only 21,000 km on the odometer – and I sold it at half the price. I couldn’t take it anymore. That’s how much it bugged me.

I then moved for my higher studies and began commuting on a humble Honda Shine SP125. For over 2 years, I rode that bike and clocked nearly 29,000 km. During that time, I quietly started doing my homework:
What should my next bike be?

I wanted something simple, durable, budget-friendly, and most importantly – made for Indian roads and climate. I wasn’t chasing speed anymore. I wanted comfort, reliability, and character.

The Spark

One evening, while scrolling through YouTube, I stumbled upon Autocar India’s review of the Suzuki V-Strom SX250 – shot in my hometown, no less! That piqued my curiosity. I watched it end-to-end. My first reaction?
"This looks interesting!"

But I didn’t stop there. I wasn’t ready to make another impulsive mistake. So I went showroom hopping – from KTM to Royal Enfield and more. I test-rode multiple bikes, sat on them, visualized long rides, and weighed in every factor possible.

Here’s why the other options didn’t make the cut:

The Contenders (and Why They Lost)

🏍️ RE Himalayan 450

  • Freshly launched – too fresh for comfort.

  • Long waiting periods.

  • Spoke wheels = tube tyres. Not ideal for daily commutes and puncture hassles.

  • I’ve always felt RE uses its customers for R&D – sorry, not sorry.

🏍️ KTM Adventure 390

  • Brilliant ergonomics. Powerful. Loaded with tech.

  • But… too pricey.

  • Too many electronics for my taste – I prefer analog reliability.

  • Worst part? The nearest service center was 60 km away.
It gave me flashbacks of pushing my RS200 5 km to home. Never again.

The Final Choice: Suzuki V-Strom SX250

Simple. Purpose-built. Pocket-friendly.

A 250cc, single-cylinder engine, built on the reliable Gixxer 250 platform – tuned for touring, with fewer electronics and more mechanical charm. It checked every box for me:

  • Ride comfort ✅

  • City + highway versatility ✅

  • Reasonable service & spares ✅

  • Great mileage for a tourer ✅

  • And… it just felt right.

It’s been almost a year now, and I’ve added a bunch of accessories to make it my own (more on that in the next blog).

Pro Tips for Choosing Your Bike – From a Rider Who’s Been There

  1. Don’t tell everyone what bike you’re getting – Evil eye is real, folks.

  2. Always test ride – more than once if needed.

  3. Make your budget the first filter. Buying the bike is easy – maintaining it is the real deal.

  4. Write a 50/50 list – what you want vs what the bike actually offers. No bike is perfect, pick flaws you can live with.

  5. Clear your head before deciding – no confusion = no regrets.

  6. Service center availability is key. Don’t buy a bike that needs a pilgrimage for servicing.

  7. Talk to real riders, not friends – Peer pressure leads to buyer's remorse.

  8. Accessories cost matter! Budget for essentials like:

    • Crash guards

    • Sump guards

    • Saddle stays

    • Mobile mounts

    • Touring seats

Final Thoughts

I didn’t buy the V-Strom SX250 to flex. I bought it because I’ve ridden bikes that left me stranded. I’ve been let down, I’ve learned the hard way, and I’ve grown as a rider. This bike, to me, is a symbol of resilience, maturity, and a new mindset.

Because real riders don’t ride to impress –
They ride to feel free.

Until next time,
Ride safe. Ride smart. Ride for the soul.
Krishna
