Blog 12 | Ride #1 – Puri to Kakatpur Mangala Temple Bike Ride – A Scenic Monsoon Journey via Konark

Hey folks, I’m back again with another ride story!
This time, I’ll be sharing my short but soul-refreshing journey to Maa Mangala Temple at Kakatpur, a serene destination tucked away in a semi-rural area, just beyond Konark. The temple sits about 60 km from Puri town, and depending on where you’re starting from, there are multiple routes to reach it:

  • From Puri: Take the Konark route.

  • From Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: Divert left from Pipli By-Pass (via Nimapada), and you’ll reach Kakatpur in about ~45 km.

The Ride Begins

I kicked off my ride in the afternoon around 3:30 PM, post-lunch. The weather was simply perfect — a mild breeze, rain clouds hovering above, and an occasional sprinkle of drizzle. I packed my raincoat, geared up, set up the top box, and set out with excitement.

The ride had two purposes for me:

  1. To soak in the monsoon beauty of Odisha’s grasslands and farmlands.

  2. To break in my new riding shoes on a short-distance trip.

And believe me, the journey gave me both.

Konark to Kakatpur – The Scenic Stretch

The ride from Puri to Konark (35 km) was smooth and rain-free, though the skies stayed moody. But once I took the diversion towards Kakatpur Mangala (via Balidokan), the weather transformed.

A cool breeze brushed past, and soon enough, the rains arrived. I stopped mid-road, wore my raincoat, and continued. What followed was sheer bliss — the vast farmlands of Kandola, drenched in monsoon charm. Endless green fields, misty winds, the rhythm of raindrops, and open stretches of road.

This is exactly why we ride — for the calmness and the sense of escape. That stretch from Konark to Kakatpur felt like a poem written by nature itself.

The Temple Town & Return Journey

I reached Kakatpur in about 1 hour. The temple stood calm amidst the drizzle, but since my plan was more about the ride than the stay, I decided to loop back via Gopalpur–Chari Chhawk road. (14km from Maa Mangala Temple) towards Pipli route.

That stretch, however, wasn’t as rider-friendly. The Gopalpur–Chari Chhawk road was patchy, narrow, and burdened with heavy vehicles — a little risky for bikers. But once I took the left turn back towards Konark, the roads were heavenly again. Smooth tarmac, endless greenery, drizzle on the visor — everything synced perfectly.

By 5:30 PM, I was back at Konark, where the skies had dried up. Another quick half-hour ride brought me home to Puri by 6:00 PM.

Reflections

This ride may have been short, but it was deeply refreshing. The mix of monsoon showers, village roads, lush farmlands, and serene landscapes made it memorable. More than just a journey, it felt like therapy — calming my nerves and washing away the noise of everyday life.

Sometimes, all we need is a two-wheeled escape and a road that whispers peace. For me, the Puri–Kakatpur ride has now earned a spot as one of those “reset button” routes I’d love to revisit.

Until the next ride — keep the throttle steady and the spirit free. ✌️

Do you want me to add travel tips at the end (like best time to visit, must-carry items, and rider’s notes) so it’s also useful for other bikers planning this ride?
